Junipers such as eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) and Ashe juniper (Juniperus ashei) have expanded their ranges throughout the Great Plains. Managing grassland with fire can reduce the number of trees and seedlings of these species. The attached factsheet provides guidelines for successful burning of these fire-sensitive species as well as instructions on how to determine the amount of fuel moisture present in the trees you plan to burn. This is critical information for anyone writing burn plans or planning to do fire management in grasslands.
