Local fire departments make important contributions to wildland fire

A new report documents the important role that local fire departments have in fighting wildland fire nationally.  These fire departments are especially important in the Great Plains where privately held properties dominate the landscape. Relationships between fire users and rural fire departments (RFD) vary across the region.  Some RFDs have embraced prescribed fire and even use them as fund raisers.  Other RFDs are wary of landowners using fire for land management.  Access to wildland fire equipment and training is also highly varied throughout the region.  Fire in the Great Plains is very interesting and complex in many ways and the role of RFDs in fire management is an important part of our story.
