New report links fire suppression policy to development in the WUI

A new report funded by the JFSP evaluated if our fire suppression policies encourage development within the wildland urban interface (the zone where the country meets the city).  The report indicates that people's knowledge that federal fire crews will be deployed to fire emergencies to suppress unplanned fires seems to increase those people's willingness to live in high risk areas.  This is not a unique phenomenon to fire, as there is similar evidence in flood or hurricane prone areas.  The analysis is focused west of the 100th meridian.  Comparisons were made to the SE where fire policies shifted sooner than on the national scale.
