This week JFSP highlighted a 2012 report that discussed how we can learn from escaped prescribed fires. We should keep this in mind as we near the spring Rx fire season. Take time to review the report and incorporate a few things into your own plans for after-action response to an escape.
Although the report was created with NWCG in mind, I think any fire organization can and should adopt some of the important principles outlined in the report. Working through the incident reporting process formally for administration and more locally with crews from the scene can help reduce future escapes and provide closure to the incident. Look for podcasts and other reports to be published from this work at the Wildfire Lessons Learned Center.
