Buckbrush response to fire

Symphoricarpos orbiculatus (more commonly known as buckbrush) is an important shrub in North American tallgrass prairie. Due to its unique reproductive mechanism, basic research is needed to understand the biological response of buckbrush to burning.

This new study examines the response of buckbrush to various fire and grazing treatments. The results suggest that buckbrush is tolerant of dormant season fires, which seem to reduce structural dominance while encouraging basal resprouting and layering.
